Downtown Cedar Rapids restaurant

Undeterred by pandemic, Iowa restauranteur announces second corridor location

On the heels of last month’s Marion announcement, Barrel House signs a lease to open a downtown Cedar Rapids restaurant. Corridor patrons will now have a second option to enjoy Barrel House’s “Food that lifts your spirits.”

Founded by Jimmy Holt in 2011, Barrel House has two Davenport locations, one each in Dubuque, Marion and Cedar Rapids, IA, the latter two opening summer and fall 2021 and Moline, IL. The restaurant features signature sauces, award-winning gourmet burgers, catering and unique events.

The high-profile corner at 1st Avenue SE and 2nd Street SE will be revived with a twist on traditional tavern favorites, specialty cocktails and an outstanding selection of local beers on tap. With an anticipated October opening, Barrel House will occupy the 3,500 square foot former Mexican restaurant space at 201 1st Avenue SE.

“Our warm, fun and inviting “taking care of people” concept has been well received by the communities in which we’ve chosen to locate,” Holt said. “I look forward to introducing Cedar Rapids patrons to our food and drink specials and events.”

Holt recognized the impact COVID had on downtown Cedar Rapids and the void of restaurant options. “We saw an opportunity to be at the forefront of the recovery and hope others will follow,” he said.

Adam Gibbs and Michael Gibbs of GLD Commercial represented both the building landlord and restaurant in this lease transaction. “Dining options have been somewhat limited in the downtown area,” Michael said. “Barrel House is a great addition and a fall opening coincides nicely with the projected return of downtown workers and events.”

Holt looks forward to expanding the Barrel House brand throughout the Midwest through its franchise opportunities.
